Review: Denison Witmer – Carry The Weight

So last fall, Pennsylvania born folk singer Denison Witmer released a new album called Carry The Weight and to be fully honest, I listened to it once, found it to be a little on the boring side, and then put it on a shelf. But I was driving home from work yesterday and decided to give it another listen. After the swell first two songs, “Beautiful Boys And Girls” and “Life Before Aesthetics,” I was ready to rethink my opinion of the album, but (unfortunately) there were more songs and although they were pretty and pleasant enough they didn’t really jump out of my speakers and grab my attention. It’s not that there is anything really wrong with the album, it just sounds flatter and more uninspired than any of Witmer’s other albums. His hushed vocals and gentle melodies are still fully intact but something is just missing. I’m a huge fan of Witmer’s 2002 album Philadelphia Songs but Carry The Weight just doesn’t do much for me. I am actually a little disappointed that I didn’t like it more because I do like a lot of Denison Witmer’s material, it’s just that this isn’t his best stuff.

And a few songs from his “covers” project that I think are particularly good.
