David Ford may share the same first name as the American Idol finalists David Cook and David Archuleta, but that is about it. Ford is an English singer-songwriter and his second album Songs For The Road isn’t really all that bad; it’s just not very memorable.
Ford’s MOR fare finds him somewhere amidst the likes of David Gray (another David) and James “Don’t Call Me David” Blunt. Songs For The Road is full of melodramatic ballads that are as uninspiring as they are unsurprisingly inoffensive. And despite some pretty good lyrical couplets, it is all too formulaic for my tastes. David Ford is not bad and I don’t dislike Songs For The Road. I’m just 100% indifferent to the music. What are your thoughts?

I gave some of his songs a listen a while back and had much the same reaction as you. I really think that not many singers can pull off such anguished and melodramatic content without sounding trite and insincere. Especially when the lyrics are somewhat bland and generic. He is definitely no Conor Oberst.

I like the record more than you, but that’s mostly just because I’m more into this sort of stuff. You’re not really wrong.
That said, check out “State of the Union” from his previous record: I Sincerely Apologise For All The Trouble I’ve Caused. That is a seriously good song and explains a big part of why I was willing to give this one some extra chances.
I also think you might enjoy his earlier work as the head of Easyworld, which was much more about glittery New Wave pop.
