Pray For Me By Name was born out of a minor tragedy. When all of Daniel Ahearn’s recording gear was stolen he not only lost the gear but also recordings of all his new material and decided to release an EP of some (relatively) stripped-down songs.
Ahearn’s main gig is (was?) with folktronica outfit Ill Lit; a band that explores the intersection of alt-country, indie-pop, and electronic music. It isn’t (to me at least) surprising then that Pray For Me By Name follows a little along those same lines. But while Ill Lit’s music is full of electronic textures and digital grit, aside from the flourish of Pray For Me By Name‘s opening track, it is all but absent here (remember, his gear was stolen).
So what is the end result? Well, it is actually really enjoyable. Ahearn mines familiar alt-country and indie-pop territory (think Summerteeth with a bit more twang) but does so with a sincerity and honesty that makes it easy to relate to. Pray For Me By Name is available now from iTunes.
