Woah. With the combined effort that is their recently released Live Free Or Don’t Tour LP, City Of Ships has dropped a mammoth and bombastic slab of shifting technical post-metal-something-core. The LP is the combination of the band’s Live Free Or Don’t EP and their more recent 2008 Tour EP and is as intense and pummeling a record as I’ve listened to recently. The first thing that struck me about City Of Ships is just how impressive and exhausting this band is and how much intensity these performances contain; the second thing is how difficult the band is to pin down stylistically as they jump from one idea to the next. I hear nods to everything from the heavy near-emo of Planes Mistaken For Stars to the textured post-metal of bands like Pelican and Isis. One thing is for sure though, this Virginia trio has a big sound anchored by with low-end rumbling bass and heavy but atmospheric guitar riffage, but not only can they do intense and heavy, they also have the chops to pull of something a bit more restrained as well. This is definitely a record that you should dig around for on wax and find it spinning on your own stereo.
