Review: Brass - Set & Drift

I don’t know where Brass is from (and it really doesn’t matter) but the 8 songs of angular post-punk on their self-released album Set & Drift sound almost timeless. It is full driving post-ATDI emo that also touches on the raw and Mission Of Burma-esqe indie rock sound (think DC) that is both discordant and melodic. Singer Joe Webber’s distinctive voice also separates the group from any so-called peers. It is wide-ranging and forceful without being overly-screamy and totally reminds me of someone that I just can’t seem to place right now.

It isn’t really all that often that I find it hard to make easy comparisons, but Brass is one of those bands. That’s a good thing and it has kept me listening to Set & Drift over and over. Like SDRE or even REM or (gasp!) The Mars Volta, there is something a little theatrical about Brass; something theatrical that is never overdone. Sure guitars explode and then just as quickly pull back into twinkling atmospherics but it never seems cliche.

…something like dancing about architecture…blah…blah…blah… truly Brass has really got something good with Set & Drift so you should do yourself a favor and check this out. Also check out their new EP (they’ve got 2 songs up on their myspace page) as it is a little more intimate-sounding and (as tough as it might be) might be even better than Set & Drift.
