Don’t you just hate it when your blogging platform eats your post? I do. That being said, to start your record out with the title track isn’t all that odd, but to have that track be the single worst song is a ballsy (but probably just ridiculously stupid) move that begs the question, “Why even include the song?” The band is Boris Smile and the song in question is “Beartooth (Spooky Version).” I mean, why on earth would you have a song with ridiculous lyrics such as those below and a chorus of one-word tuneless moaning as the first song (or any song) on a record is beyond me.
You close your eyes and see him there
Much smarter than your average bear
He rips through tents and cabin walls
With the strength of hell and the force of Niagara Falls
If he gets you he’ll eat your face
And then he’ll eat your soul
At night when you lay down to sleep
You hide your face beneath your sheets
You made your house from sticks and mud
And he’ll huff and puff and boy he wants your blood
Spookily awful if you ask me, but after that abomination, a funny thing happens; the rest of the five song EP is actually really enjoyable. I’m 100% serious here. The band reminds me a bit of a little less upbeat Page France that’s a bit darker and with a bit more ornamentation and orchestration. It’s acoustic-based indie pop that’s got a sort of innocence that makes the imperfections seem totally charming and the inclusion of the title track that much more confounding. Truly confounding. So, I’ll keep the Beartooth EP on my iPod but it will be four songs instead of five. I mean, what was Boris Smile thinking here? They are obviously a good band, but…

When I first read the title to this I thought Boris had just released a Smile Beartooth EP (which would make sense… the name, at least… somewhat). Not exactly drone metal, but it’s alright… this “Hour of the Wolf” doesn’t stand out on its own though, and if you’re saying the title track is a piece of trash compared to it, it must really suck.
Guess I’ll have to wait on that Boris EP.
