Review: Bonnie “Prince” Billy – Beware

Somehow I’ve never even investigated or listened to Bonnie “Prince Billy before now despite always being intrigued. Nevertheless, I totally love his latest album Beware and will surely be digging around through his back catalog sometime very soon. In short, Beware is nothing more complicated that a great country record. Not a country rock record, not an alt-country record, not a pop-country record. This is (at least the way my ears hear it) just a great country album (ok maybe a little bit of folksiness thrown in) that I would recommend to fans of Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, etc… Will Oldham (the man behind Bonnie “Prince” Billy) has been making music for quite some time and his voice is fragile but confident and the backing instrumentation is exactly what it needs to be; sparse and weeping at times and upbeat and almost triumphant on other songs. Beware is twangy and totally awesome. I am goodbye.

This album IS a classic. Kind of like a remake of the Jimmy Webb/Elvis-in-his-cabaret-guise era. Look at Bonnie Prince Billy’s album Greatest Palace Music for similar.
