Review: Birdmonster – From The Mountain To The Sea

Oh Birdmonster, where did the super-frenzied indie-dance-punk-meets-Americana music of No Midnight go? I understand you are unlike your buzzworthy friends from the blogosphere of a few years back but (hey!) way too much of your new album, From The Mountain To The Sea is mono-lodic and woefully mid-tempo. I ain’t hatin’ on your though. There are decent tracks a-plenty like “New Country,” “Born To Be Your Man,” and “The Iditarod,” but nothing (not a singe song) even threatens to break out and shed the chains of restraint that seem to be weighing this album down. There’s energy here on From The Mountain To The Sea and it seems that Birdmonster’s heart is in the right place, but it just seems a little, well, blah. At least much more so that I had anticipated. If ever I get out to San Fransisco I’ll ask the band all about this. In the meantime, I’ll pick the best songs from the album, put ‘em on my iPod and move on. NOTE: After writing this review I kept listening to the record and it’s grown on me. Even the slow songs. Perhaps my words above are a little strong, but the record still needs a little kick in the ass.
