Review: Big Buildings - Wampum

At the intersection of Folk Rock Alley, Alt-Country Boulevard, and Indie Pop Street, there are most certainly a few dive bars nestled snugly between the surrounding Big Buildings. Their latest album Wampum is filled with the same sort of ragged boozy melodies that graced their 2006 album Water Everywhere while keeping this one a little looser but somehow less sprawling. Big Buildings calls Chicago home so it isn’t surprising that Wampum is urban roots-rock at its finest. It conjures up images of Paul Westerberg jamming with Jeff Tweedy and Neil Young in a dimly lit back room; dusty and breezy at times but unafraid to devolve in to a noisy uproarious stomp. It’s raw and a little lo-fi, but endearing and 100% great. Wampum will certainly show up my ’08 year end list. Maybe yours too?
