Even today, when you think about New Orleans one of the first things that will (most likely) pop into your head is Hurricane Katrina. So it was only fitting that when the New Orleans based duo Belong released their debut album October Language in 2006 it was seen by many as somewhat of a response to the event. Perhaps it was the context of the record combined with it’s sense of richly fading sunlight casting dark and quickly lengthening shadows that made it so beautiful, perhaps not. But Belong has got a new EP of (gasp) cover songs out now called Colorloss Record. The EP is brief but its density makes feel infinitely longer. For those wondering, the EP covers four fairly obscure songs by the likes of Syd Barrett, Tintern Abbey, Billy Nicholls, and July but obscures and warps the songs almost beyond recognition into blurs of noise and washes of static. Like the shoegaze of My Bloody Valentine but wrapped in gauze or like a darker version of M83. Not as powerful as their last album, the Colorloss Record EP is still masterful as it plunges in and out of a swirling feedback haze.
