Review: Be Your Own Pet – Get Awkward

Kids will be kids, right? That’s exactly what Nashville, Tennessee teen-punks-in-heat Be Your Own Pet are. These kids have a new album out called Get Awkward and just like its predecessor, it is boiling over with brash and incendiary punk-n-roll tunes. Singer Jemina Pearl is snarling teenage girl angst personified and the boys that back her lay down a raw and ragged backdrop perfect for her sassy and snotty-yet-saccharine delivery. Whether she’s singing or shouting about how her town is a black hole, self-mutilation, broken hearts and lying ex’s, or plans to kick the crap out of a back stabbing former BFF, it’s hard not to believe her. She’s like a sweetly smiling little girl holding a butcher knife behind her back. Be Your Own Pet can be a little much after a few listens, but isn’t that part of the point?
