Abe Vigoda’s Skeleton sounds like a warped lo-fi mutation of the sort of indie tropicalia dished out by the likes of Vampire Weekend and whoever their contemporaries are. I totally dig it. These four dudes from L.A. squelch out melodically clanky and squawkingly repetitive tunes and there are even parts of Skeleton that you could easily mistake for something Black Dice might have destroyed. The noisy racket (that’s a compliment) that Abe Vigoda spews forth is gloriously dirty and fuzzed out in the best possible way. It is music that seems to take root back in the days of cassette tapes and analog distortion. So what kind of ridiculous off-the-wall comparison can I come up with in addition to any of the musical references mentioned above? Well, just imagine if Peter Gabriel and Steve Albini got together and drank pina colada’s on a beach somewhere warm with the members of Parts & Labor. Catch my drift? So, yeah, even though I’ve been saying this a lot lately, this album is among the best of 2008 even though it wasn’t on my list.
