Polyvinyl generally does right by me so the fact that Worried Well (the sixth full-length from Portland, Oregon’s 31 Knots) is good doesn’t surprise me. In fact, Worried Well is something that seems to fit right in with the slightly-challenging yet melodic indie rock that’s all the rage these days. It makes me wonder what 31 Knots has been doing all these years. From the ominously stomping pianos to the gnashing distorted guitars, this is sloughy indie rock at its finest; intense and quite enjoyable. The music is folded like an origami crane made from a $20 bill. It’s contorts pop melodies into post-punk grooves that are noisier and skronkier than (but still sorta swing like) Aloha, Spoon, or (I may be stretching it) Vampire Weekend.
