This past Sunday I had the chance to see Red Cortez, The War On Drugs, and The Tallest Man On Earth at Schubas. I meant to have this up on Monday, but you know how the weeks can get busy, right? Anyhow, Red Cortez was an awesome surprise. Their sound was akin to that of an indie rock Los Lobos (or at least something like that). I predict big things for ‘em.
After Red Cortez, I was excited to see The War On Drugs (from Philadelphia) brought their shoegazey Americana to the stage. I was surprised at how good they were and that so much noise could come from just a trio. It was different than I expected, but noisy and wonderful. Somehow, I’m not sure how their album Wagonwheel Blues didn’t make my best of 2008 list.
And finally, Kristian Matsson (aka The Tallest Man On Earth) captivated the audience with only his voice, guitar, and huge quirky stage presence. It was a great show.

he doesn’t look that tall.
Red Cortez was incredible. It was my first time seeing them! I thought they were original. war on Drugs were okay but Tallest Man on Earth and Red Cortez were my high-lights of the night. Kudos on the photots
I caught part of a Red Cortez set in Austin during SXSW…gotta tell you, I felt like they were aping The Walkmen…and it was a bad imitation. But this is the kind of writeup that earns bands another spin. Will check them again post haste. Thanks
