Having never before heard anything from Nakatomi Plaza and considering just how good their final album Ghosts is, I’m actually a bit disappointed that the band recently called it quits. While that means I won’t have a chance to see ‘em live, I do know that I’ll be digging around through their other releases. On the surface, I guess you could call Ghosts a melodic punk rock album, but there is so much more to it than that. I also wouldn’t call it post-hardcore or post-rock but these songs are certainly anything but straightforward punk tunes. So about Nakatomi Plaza… first there’s the juxtaposed male/female vocals that give the music an extra impressive dynamic (as if it needed more dynamics). Then there’s the twitchy melodies that just beg you to listen over again, there’s the shifting stop/start rhythms, and the guitar effects and over-the-top squealing solos. It’s all tightly wound and bursting with restless kinetic energy. It all adds up to the weird and oddly awesome album that Ghosts is.
Nakatomi Plaza self-released Ghosts so do youreself a favor and (if you like the songs below) stop by their still live site and pick up a copy. There’s also something about the vocals and melodies that kinda reminds me of the band Paris, Texas. Anyone remember them?

yeah these guys are great… i didn’t even know this was out.
their last album was super good. i had the album in a demo-form before it was named forever. i can’t even recall what it’s called. there’s an old track called “meanwhile in greenpoint” that’s a regular in my playlists.
oscar used to be in awesome melodic hxc band de la hoya and is in some new project called robot ninja bear or something.
they used to practice down the hall from my old space and i could hear them while peeing. r.i.p.
[...] CYSTSFTS recently got on board with Nakatomi Plaza, even though the band has called it quits. If you’re not on board yet, you should be, too. [...]
I first heard of this band from their song on an Org Fest sampler a year or two back. I always liked the sound of Red Leader Records but for whatever reason I never got anything by Nakatomi Plaza until I read about their farewell tour. So then I bought Ghosts and it was definitely top 10 of 2009. I really wish I’d had the chance to see them live.
Nice! Thanks for introducing me to this… just downloaded “Not Hopeless” off their “Frog Octopus Wolf” EP on emusic.com Cool stuff, and I probably wouldn’t have heard of them w/o you.
No problem. Glad you’ve found some stuff to your liking!
This band was amazing live. First time on this site. It kicks all kinds of ass.
Thanks Johnny!
