Joie De Vivre – Summer Months

Another band I’ve been meaning to write about for what seems like forever is Joie De Vivre. These guys call nearby Rockford, IL (where my brother-in-law Tim grew up) home and have a sound that harkens back to mid-90’s post-indie Midwestern emo. The band emailed me months ago asking for me to take a listen and Will over at Sound As Language also put them on my radar, but (like always) it took me a little while to finally get to this.

Now there have been a slew of bands over the past few years that have recaptured the emo sounds that I grew up with and Joie De Vivre is another of those seemingly like-minded bands. I don’t toss these sorts of comparisons around lightly, but these guys have much in common with early-Promise Ring, maybe Mineral, Boy’s Life, Rockford emo pioneers God’s Reflex, and even labelmates Empire Empire. You get the picture. Their latest release Summer Months is out now on Count Your Lucky Stars and is plinky, wandering, and circularly pensive but doesn’t lack punch. Good new music that sounds a little (or a lot) like the bands mentioned above.
