The first time I tried to listen to Deep Search was on my way to the local animal shelter last fall after the second of our two cats had died in the space of less than one calendar month. Needless to say, I wasn’t “feeling it” back then and every time I considered listening to it I just vividly remembered that day and didn’t. Coming back to listen to this album now, the debut from Tallahassee, Florida’s Friends of Friends, what I’ve uncovered is a record that is not pretending to be anything more than what it is; fairly uncomplicated gruff and gritty mildly melodic punk that (seeing as how these guys are from Florida and all) wouldn’t disappoint fans of No Idea Records in the slightest. You know, energetic tunes full of despair with raw and ragged vocals urging you to shout along. For the sake of comparison, FoF sounds kinda like a less poppy version of No Empathy, Leatherface, and/or the Menzingers. It’s that noisy Chicago sound invading the the swampy south. Maybe I’ve just listened to too much music between yesterday and today, but the overly jumbled and un-production (to these tired ears) does nothing to help how I feel about Deep Search though. Still, I really dig this and can’t wait to hear what Friends Of Friends have in store for us next but, for now, go download this whole album via the band’s Myspace page for fee.
I also still miss my cats.
