The first Ann Beretta album I heard was their acoustic EP so it isn’t much of a stretch to think that Rob & Russ (both from Ann Beretta and also Inquisition before that) are playing together in Foundation, a country/roots-rock band. It’s actually funny how many good bands can be labeled as ex-Inquisition including Strike Anywhere, Ann Beretta, River City High, and now Foundation. Anyhow, the music on Foundation’s first full-length, Chimborazo, isn’t the slightest bit punk. This is full-on country music here with fiddles, acoustic guitars, and plenty of twangy melancholy. It’s got a little of what indie-country guys like Justin Townes Earle or Ryan Adams and punks like Chris Wollard, Tim Barry, and Chuck Ragan are bringing to the table but there’s no shortage of hooks and almost radio-ready modern country sheen (think Josh Gracin) that I secretly like. With accompanying instrumentation like harmonica, pedal steel, accordion, piano, and the occasional banjo, and female backing vocals there’s no mistaking this for anything but what it is. Heck, I swear that there are more than a few songs on Chimborazo like “Roses Over Me” that could be a country radio hit. It’s a great and unexpected but totally honest and relaxed album that I’d recommend to fans of Whiskeytown, Uncle Tupelo, A.M. – era Wilco, and those I mentioned above. Get it now (or their new EP) from Vinnie and the kick-ass dudes at Paper + Plastick.
