The cool kids over at P Is For Panda recently released singer-songwriter Damion Suomi’s self-titled full-length and I’ve definitely been digging his easy Americana-pop ways. The album itself is actually pretty simple and is focused around Suomi’s vocals (which are oftentimes very Michael Stipe like) and his acoustic guitar more than anything else even when augmented by drums or other instruments. Strangely, though, for as much as I keep telling myself this is just above average singer-songwriter fare, I’m drawn into these songs every time I listen. I just can’t help it. Whether it’s the drinking songs, the tales of busted romances, or the bar room sing-a-longs, there’s a bit of an Irish pub feel to many of the songs that makes the simplest lines ring true. RIYL: Denison Witmer, Dustin Kensrue, Billy Bragg, etc…

Thanks for the rec! I’ve been really digging Denison Witmer lately and I have a real affinity for singer/songwriter stuff.
First thing I thought when listening to these samples is that he sounds like Michael Stipe! And that’s funny because I read your review AFTER listening.
