Backseat Virgins – Carl

Backseat Virgins - CarlOh pop punk, why do I love thee so and why/how do I keep finding good and entertaining bands to listen to? I almost can’t take it anymore. My brain’s on overload. Backseat Virgins are just that sort of band. They’re a bubblegum pop punk band from Birmingham, Alabama complete with keyboards, both male and female vocals, and (mostly) mid-to-uptempo catchy, head bobbing tunes. Their sophomore album, Carl, is a pretty straightforward demonstration of what the band is all about. It’s solid but I would never call it “tight” and the vocal harmonies are just “off” enough that you know it’s real. I can’t help but think of leather jacket and Chuck Taylor clad teenagers holding hands when I hear this and remember my own teenage years. It’s definitely worth your time, but I think they may have lifted one of the guitar leads from The Humdingers. Wait, it’s pop punk. RIYL: Teen Idols, Queers, Squirtgun, Bullets To Broadway, etc…
