Attack In Black – Marriage

I really really loved Attack In Black’s last album, Marriage, and its warm and inviting rootsy post-hardcore and I was eager to hear more of it on the band’s follow-up, but their newest album, Years (By One Thousand Fingertips), is such a departure from that sound, that I wasn’t even sure it was the same band at first. Despite being (again) full of roots-rock, Years is a much softer and folksier album than Marriage but is no less incredible. I actually found it almost comical (and awesome) that Julie Doiron provides guest vocals to the album as one of the first comparisons I was going to make was that Attack In Black sounds quite a lot like some of her more recent albums. Years shows a band that is maturing and accepting change rather than fighting it. Sure, there were shades of Years shown on Marriage and still shades of Marriage on Years, but I don’t think anyone expected such a transition. It’s really good though ,so I don’t mind… much.
