Additional subtraction skills

I just got back from the first math class I have taken in over 8 years and let’s just say I am a little rusty. Like most people, I never really enjoyed math when I was younger so “getting into it” again might prove to be a bit of a challenge. At least it isn’t calculus.

On a less positive note (read: really bad) Kerry Wood gave up three home runs in three innings. OK. I can live with that. Then he left tonight’s game with soreness in his right shoulder. I would be willing to bet that he never pitches a full season in the big leagues again. I’d like to hear the opinions over at Lingering Bursitis if Blogger ever fixes whatever technical issues they are having over there.

Since tonight was Finite Math, I was going to choose some math-rock songs or maybe something classical, but I didn’t. Essentially music is comprised of notes which are sound waves at different frequencies. These waves could each be written out as mathematical equations if you so desired. Math = music. I’m tired. Also, the Clash is the best band ever.

1  Kurt - 1265 days ago Finally, you say something truthful. The Clash are, indeed, the best band ever. And it's your birthday. Happy Birthday. You'll be getting a phone call later.
2 gone - 1265 days ago Ok, nice to know. Happy birthday. Kerry Wood's a bitch. Rhythm is math, too. Don't forget rhythm.
3 WunEyedDog - 1265 days ago I'm a big fan of math, personally, but I'm weird.

I read an editorial that called Sandanistas the greatest failure ever. As in, it was great, but it flopped anyway. I am inclined to agree.
4 JT - 1265 days ago Yeah, Wood's latest struggles are troubling to say the least. It's not good to see someone fight all the way back from several injuries only to fall again. Like watching Jan Ullrich fall behind Lance, only to drag himself up the mountain to his back wheel and then almost immediately fall behind again.

Wood is, I'm afraid, going to be one of those guys in sports who exhibits so much promise and yet never lives up to it. He was seriously overworked in his first couple of seasons, perhaps leading to having a crap shoulder now, and it's easy to forget that he's never won more than 14 games in a season. This year was supposed to be that "year" where he surpassed his body and really did well.

Also, thanks again for the concern re: LB. I have no clue what's happening, but I have faith it will return. And when it does, boy howdy will it return with full force. In the interim, we've jerryrigged a crude approximation of LB at:

www.lbcubstwo.blogspot.com, or Lingering Bursitis II: the young, petulant sister of LB 1.0

she's a looker, but she'll drift into yr life and out again before you can even say "Merle Haggard."

Cheers,

JT

PS. Math rock makes my head hurt, mainly because I can never pin down exactly what the heck it is. Please, enlighten me. I know my Rondells from my Sharondas, but no luck on the math-rock.
5  Emily - 1265 days ago C'mon, Eric, Calculus was fun...

Happy Birthday!
6 Eric - 1264 days ago Jacob - Thanks. My prediction: Woody is done for the season. Yes. How could I forget the driving rhythm?

WunEye - I was listening to Sandinista in the car with my wife the other day and she remarked "This is good, we should listen to this more." If she likes it... The majority of music consumers are idiots.

JT - Who will be back first: LB or Woody? My money is on LB. As for math rock, not so easy to pin down. Don Cab, A Minor Forest, and/or stuff in that vein. Technical (mostly) instrumental indie-rock, but I'm not Webster's.
7 Eric - 1264 days ago Kurt - Do everyone a favor and get a blogger account.
8 gone - 1264 days ago Right-on.
9 PAgirly - 1260 days ago who is going to teach little what's her name how to do math?
sure as hell won't be me. i got no skillz.
i'll fret about this for the next 7 years, i'm sure.
