A recap of the Smoking Popes show last night

Okay. So why in the world was the Smoking Popes show last night not sold out? It was their record release show for Stay Down and the first time I had a chance to see them with new drummer Neil Hennessy. You might be familiar with Neil as the drummer for The Lawrence Arms, The Falcon, and (formerly) Colossal and his playing is 100% perfect for the Smoking Popes. They sounded sooooooo good last night. Sundowner (Chris from The Lawrence Arms) opened, but the crowd wasn’t into it and none of the subtleties from his record made it to the stage. I enjoyed Sundowner’s set, but they would be so much better at (say) Schubas.

As for the new Smoking Popes album, Stay Down, well, it sounds like the Smoking Popes, so if you like them, you’ll like the record. A full review and a song or two will be coming soon.

That is cool that Neil is drumming for the Smoking Popes now. Huge feather in his cap to say the least.
