Kurt - Forever Got Shorter is indeed the best Braid song, hence its inclusion here.
Grubbs - You have chapters devoted to each of these bands for a good reason. They were two of the best.
Andy - It had to be the bourbon. You were never the sappy emo type. In fact, you gave me shit for my emo leanings. I agree 100% with your comments about Reggie being a distraction.
Another fine post. Your blog is a surefire trip back to the good old c-u days. I hadn't seen the Get Up Kids in a really long time, but couldn't pass up the chance to see their last chicago show. I don't know if it was the bourbon or the music, but seeing them play songs off of 4 minute mile, even with reggie messing up the songs (he's a distraction in my opinion) made me feel all sappy. And that GUK/Coalesce split 7" is a classic. But what about the GUK/Braid split? "Postmark Stamps"or something? I remember that record being all the rage for the kids who couldn't get their hands on one, myself included.
Eric-
Now you're spotlighting bands that have complete chapters devoted to them in my book! Shall be a good read (at least I think so!).

Funny side note - if there was one possible alternate book title, I would have gone with Forever Got Shorter
Carter - I own that GUK/Coalesce 7". While I'm not an expert on grind or hardcore by any means, "emo" really developed out of the hardcore scene by guys who wanted to add a little melody to hardcore. So the two are and will always be linked in some fashion. Oh the Coalesce version of 2nd place is sick.
Nice post, Skipper. Funny that the two GUK shows you mentioned you went to with me. Ha!
In case other people didn't know this, Forever Got Shorter is the best Braid song ever. Good choices today.
I was listening to your post of Second Place to see if it was on a GUK record that i own, and it sounded familiar...not because it is on one of my records, but because i've heard a cover of it. I don't know if you're familiar with Coalesce, but they are the ones who covered it. They are like a harcore/growling vocals/rolling guitars band. I'm not really big on hardcore music, but this band isn't that bad, and their cover of second place is actually quite good (as i remember it, it has been a few years). I believe GUK covered one of their songs too. This was back in the day when "emo" bands and "hardcore" bands were somehow classified as being almost the same thing. is that still the case? Did you ever hear/see/experience this? im from kankakee, and among the "hipsters" here, that seemed to be the case.
