I was talking to my brother a couple days ago and somehow we got on the topic of the best songs of all time and then talked about it at length. We both decided that there is certainly a list of songs that could be considered the greatest or most important songs of all time and that there’s really no use in arguing at all over those songs; songs like “Hey Jude,” “Satisfaction,” and “Stairway To Heaven.” The debate begins when you make the list personal. That’s when it gets interesting.
We decided that if we were going to play out this exercise in futility that the rules would make it a list of “desert island songs.” Imagine you’re stuck on a deserted island and you’ve got an iPod or even a solar-powered cassette player that can only play 100 songs for the rest of your life. What are those 100 songs?
After going round and round about this, we quickly realized that this is an impossibly difficult list to make. Still, we’re both going to make it and publish our lists here. You’re welcome to play along if you want to. I’m hoping that I can convince some other bloggers and musicians to play along too.
I mean, think about your favorite albums and try to pick which songs you’d choose. What singles would you choose? What genres? How many Hot Water Music songs do you choose? There’s so much to consider and that’s what makes it a totally worthwhile endeavor.

Wow, how fun and difficult at the same time! Ivan, my band mate, would certainly disagree with me, but personally, the first songs that come to mind are Radiohead – Paranoid Android, The Beatles – A Day in the Life, Smashing Pumpkins – Porcelina of the Vast Oceans…I will have to think more!
