Over Stars And Gutters – Consider This Your Curse
Consider This Your Curse, the debut full-length from Norman, Oklahoma’s Over Stars And Gutters, just may be one of the best surprises I’ve come across all year (thanks Beartrap). The band’s gruff mid-tempo punk rock fits somewhere between the likes Hot Water Music (but poppier), Polar Bear Club (but a bit more uptempo), and Dillinger (Read more…)
Rancid – Let The Dominoes Fall
About two months ago the veteran East Bay punks in Rancid released their seventh proper full-length, Let The Dominoes Fall, which also marks their first in 6 years. I could ramble on about this album and its 19 songs, but, instead, I’ll just say that this is easily their best album since 1998’s Life Won’t (Read more…)
Roadside Graves – My Son’s Home
With My Son’s Home, Roadside Graves have delivered a sprawling and amazing record that will (most likely) be ranked among the year’s best by more than a few critics. The band combines yearning alt-country folk, fiddles, Alman Brothters style Southern rock guitars, and Dylan-esqe vocals into something that is as all over the map as (Read more…)
Pop Punk Junk Vol. 4
Here’s the fourth installment of this silly mega compilation I’m putting together. For some reason whenever I listen to Cletus, I think of Andy Pishko. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. MP3 | Pennywise – Dying To Know from the 1993 album Unknown Road MP3 | The Unlovables – (Read more…)
North Lincoln – Midwestern Blood
Two years in the making, North Lincoln’s new album Midwestern Blood was definitely worth the wait. It might not blow you away (at first) but it is more than damn solid, plus these dudes are from Grand Rapids, and who doesn’t like Grand Rapids? Anyhow, the album takes cues from the likes of both Samiam (Read more…)
Sarah Jarosz – Song Up In Her Head
Song Up In Her Head is the impressive debut from 18 year-old bluegrass prodigy Sarah Jarosz and I really like it. This isn’t (however) your typical bluegrass record despite the instrumentation and isn’t necessarily what you’d expect from someone this young. Vocally, she’s great and shows she’s a great mandolin and banjo player as well. (Read more…)
Pop Punk Junk Vol. 3
More pop punk than you can shake a stick at. From the short-lived Sludgeworth to current stuff that borders on mall-punk, pop punk comes in many different flavors. Consider this a sampler platter. MP3 | MxPx – Punk Rawk Show from the 1995 album Teenage Politics MP3 | All Time Low – Dear Maria Count (Read more…)
Lucero – Live 8/15/09 @ Subterranean
The wife and I headed into the city last weekend for our first night out since kiddo #2 came into the picture about 5 weeks before. We headed to Subterranean to see Lucero and find out how the songs from the 1372 Overton Park pre-order sampler would translate to the stage. Even without the horns (Read more…)
