Kid, You’ll Move Mountains – Loomings
Kid, You’ll Move Mountains is easily the best band from Chicago’s Western ‘burbs (my stomping grounds) that I’ve heard in quite some time but for whatever reason, I’ve been meaning to review Loomings (their most recent release) for, like, forever. Maybe the reason I haven’t is that the band makes comparisons difficult. I don’t usually (Read more…)
Justin Townes Earle – Midnight At The Movies
Without question, one of my favorite albums of 2009 thus far is Midnight At The Movies from Justin Townes Earle. Being the son of Steve Earle and named after Townes Van Zandt can’t be easy, but Justin’s work easily stands on its own. In fact, Midnight At The Movies is simply amazing and actually (IMHO) (Read more…)
Kids Books: Here’s The Punk Alphabet & M Is For Metal
If you are a parent to a youngster and a fan of fine music (like me), you definitely need to check out the following rowdy rock-n-roll-inspired alphabet books. The two books are called Never Mind Your P’s And Q’s: Here’s The Punk Alphabet and M Is For Metal! and both feature bright, bold illustrations and (Read more…)

Learning to ride a Unicycle: Day 1
For whatever reason, I’ve had a burning desire to learn to ride a unicycle for a few months now. To make sure I wasn’t just being impulsive, I waited and waited but (finally) I bought a slightly used unicycle via ebay earlier this week and picked it up today. I met the seller in a (Read more…)
The Wooden Birds – Magnolia
For anyone that is/was a fan of the final three American Analog Set records, finding out that AmAnSet frontman Andrew Kenny had a new band was exciting news. Well, I was (at least) excited. Anyhow, his new band is The Wooden Birds and their debut album is called Magnolia. The sound is similar but where (Read more…)
Stuff I should have written about months ago (vol. 3)
Chris Pureka has an EP out with some studio tracks and a handful of live tracks that is Americana-tinged singer/songwriter fare. Actually quite good (as in way better than I expected it to be even though I’m not sure why I didn’t think it would be good). This song is especially great. RIYL: Indigo Girls, (Read more…)
Anchor Arms – Cold Blooded
The first thing that entered my mind when I heard Anchor Arms’debut full-length Cold Blooded was that they had the classic Gainesville punk rock sound. You know, sludgey and loose mid-tempo punk rock with gruff shredded-throat whiskey-soaked vocals. The songs are catchy, but not too catchy, but with enough “whoa’s” and such that you might (Read more…)
Movers & Shakers – Larrabee
Boston’s Movers & Shakers have a great little record called Larrabee that’s “officially” coming out on June 9th. It’s full of wide-ranging, ragged, and sprawling Americana rock that references everything from Paul Westerberg to The Band and from Lucero to The Clash. Sure, it’s nothing new but done well enough that you just might like (Read more…)
