It came from the nineties (Vol. 51)

It came from the nineties (Vol. 51)

Just what you needed and wanted for a Tuesday morning, right? Here in Chicago it’s dreary and rainy, but there’s nothing like some music to brighten up your day, plus I told you I’d make good on my promise of not waiting another two months before the next one. Want more, just find “1990’s” in (Read more…)

Review: Heartless Bastards – The Mountain

The Heartless Bastards played Chicago earlier this year and, if their new album The Mountain is any indication, I wish I would have been there to see it. On The Mountain the trio dishes out some seriously blues-driven roots rock that certainly references Led Zeppelin and the early 70’s in more than a few places. (Read more…)

Review: Shorebirds – It’s Gonna Get Ugly

Shorebirds sounds like a great idea, right? Take Matt Canino from Latterman and Chris Bauermeister from Jawbreaker and put them in a band together and it should be, like, one of the most, like, awesomest things you’ve ever heard, like, totally. Their debut self-titled 7” was amazing, but their single full-length, It’s Gonna Get Ugly (Read more…)

Review: Travel By Sea – …Days Of My Escape

If you are looking for slowly meandering alt-country then you need to look no further than Travel By Sea and their latest album …Days Of My Escape. It is full of sparse and spacious arrangements that oftentimes feature a lone banjo or guitar, some vocals, and little else. With the poignant vocals with a tone (Read more…)

Stuff I should have written about months ago (vol. 2)

I liked this David Byrne and Brian Eno collaboration Everything That Happens Will Happen Today way more than I thought I would. I’m not sure why I thought that considering that I’m a fan of Byrne’s work in Talking Heads and Eno’s solo work as well as Roxy Music. The songs have been described by (Read more…)

Band You Should Know: The Get Go

Band You Should Know: The Get Go

The Get Go are a pop/punk/rock band from Chicago that at one point featured my ex-bandmate Scott before he choose to make a go of a solo career in Japan. Anyhow, the band is a nu-pop punk wet dream consisting of ex-members of Allister, Showoff, Mest and others and the sounds exactly like you’d think (Read more…)

Review: Merit – Arson Is For Lovers

It was almost three years ago that I reviewed a double EP from Syracuse, NY’s Merit and said I heard “a talented band that hadn’t yet found their identity” and that the record was good and “significantly more cohesive than their previous release” but that it “still retains a little of that 311 meets Incubus (Read more…)

Review: Living With Lions – Dude Manor EP

Late last year, I gave the debut full-length from Vancouver’s Living With Lions, Make Your Mark a pretty decent review but I’ve listened to the album many times since then and have really grown fond of it. This was before the band was signed to Adeline Records (Billie Joe from Green Day’s label) and before (Read more…)

It came from the nineties (Vol. 50)

Wow, it’s been almost two months since the last episode of “It cam from the 90’s.” Can you believe it? So here, we’ve got that annoying Vengaboys song and Sponge’s “Molly.” Such an underrated band I saw on a few occasions at Metro in the mid 90’s. Then you’ve got some PM Dawn, Ministry, and (Read more…)
