Review: Backseat Virgins – Born Again

If bubblegum pop-punk that is filled with lotsa boy/girl vocal harmonies is your thing, then you totally gotta check out Born Again from Alabama’s Backseat Virgins. I can only describe them as something like a cross between The Queers, Squirtgun, and Teen Idols, but a little rawer and more lo-fi sound. You know, three chord (Read more…)

Review: Attack In Black – Marriage

My favorite album of the moment (in addition to the new Chris Walla and Ida albums) has got to be Attack In Black’s 2007 album Marriage. It beautifully fuses rough and tumble punk with delicate and yearning alt-country melodies shaded with a hint of Springsteen-esqe rock n’ roll and sounds like the pulse of the (Read more…)

Review: Ida – Lovers Prayers

We here at Can You See the Sunset love Ida. Ida also happens to have a brilliant new record called Lovers Prayers that was just released today by the fine folks at Polyvinyl Records. It is a hauntingly gorgeous and achingly delicate record that showcase Ida’s uniquely modern brand of folk music. The crystalline vocal (Read more…)

It came from the nineties (Vol. 1)

I guess I could say that I came of age in the 1990’s and the music of that decade is part of me. So I’ve decided to start a new feature here called “It Came From The Nineties” that will feature the songs I grew up with in the 90’s including the good, the bad, (Read more…)

Review: Chris Walla – Field Manual

Last night after we put Hailey to bed, I put on Chris Walla’s solo debut Field Manual and after about four songs asked my wife who it reminded her of or who she might compare it to (not telling her that it was Chris Walla plus she wouldn’t know his name if I did). She (Read more…)

A garage cleaning mix

So I spent most of today cleaning the garage and re-arranging all sorts of stuff. Hailey spent all day begging to watch Little Einsteins for the millionth time. She also painted some pictures and colored with her markers. Unfortunately (but cute) she also colored on her face. Typical two year old stuff I suppose. MP3 (Read more…)

Winepress vs. The Mushuganas vs. Parasites

In the fictional world of celebrity fighting, I wonder who would win this heavyweight punk rock battle? MP3 | Winepress – Disappointed MP3 | The Mushuganas – Disappointed MP3 | Parasites – When I’m Here With You MP3 | The Mushuganas – When I’m Here With You MP3 | Winepress – Stay Awhile MP3 | (Read more…)

Review: Gallows – Orchestra Of Wolves

I think I heard Mr. Brett from Epitaph Records refer to Orchestra Of Wolves as the best punk record since Refused’s Shape Of Punk To Come. I wouldn’t necessarily go that far, but it is pretty damn good. Orchestra Of Wolves is the debut album from Watford, England’s Gallows. It angrily explodes into a razor-sharp (Read more…)

Review: 20 Belows – Headaches & Moodswings

It really must be pop-punk Thursday today since I’m now posting about a Danish band called the 20 Belows. They released a full-length called Headaches And Moodswings just about a year ago that is the epitome of lovelorn boy pop-punk. Singer Ulrich Basler’s instantly recognizable and winsome vocals go a long way to making this (Read more…)
