This morning the family headed downtown early to watch my sister and her boyfriend run the 2007 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon. It was already hot and humid before 8AM, and it only got worse. Despite (or perhaps because of) the record heat (high of 88 in Chicago with humidity about 80%) both the men's and women's "pro" races came down to exciting finishes.
In the men's race Patrick Ivuti overtook Jaouad Gharib at the finish line to win by 5 hundredths of a second in a tim of 2:11:11.00, while, in the women's race defending champion, Berhane Adere, overtook first-time marathoner Adriana Pirtea in the final 10 yards. But even with the close finishes, the story of the day was the heat.
The record heat was stifling and made for the hottest day in Chicago Marathon history. The heat was also tragically fatal. One runner was confirmed dead and over 350 were taken away in ambulances. The temperatures also forced race organizers to close the course and bring the 2007 LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon to an early end. The Chicago police actually forced many participants (including my sister) to walk the final 4+ miles if they wished to complete the race. She was pissed about it, but I think that if drastic measures hadn't been taken the injury total would have been much much higher. All in all, of the 45,000 that registered for the race, less than 25,000 completed it.
It was brutal. Both my sister and her boyfriend finished about an hour slower than what they trained for. So between the marathon mayhem, the playoff sweep of our beloved Chicago Cubs, and the inevitable Bears loss at the hands of Favre and the Packers, it is shaping up to be a doozy of a weekend. Below is a mix commerating the marathon.

Pairing Asia with Wolf Parade was an inspired choice. Looks like an entirely awesome mix though the Cure song doesn't work for me.
Hey! The Bears actually won!
Their was NO water at first two water stations.. AT LEAST!
'we had water but it was not getting out fast enough'....
0.00 drops. I was 5 hour on pace and officials are lying . they were under prepared and overwhelmed.
If they would just admit as much I could move on, but for those liars to claim they were sure they had water it an outright lie. Stations were empty tables were on sides!
"No more water" I was TOLD!!
Runners in gas stations buying water.
And Mayor Daly wants the SUMMER Olympics here? HAAA HAAA
GO bears go, go bears go, hey chicago what do you say, the bears are gonna win today!
