Los Angeles is home to so much hype and music industry hogwash that it is nice when a band from LA actually lives up to it. Foreign Born is that band. Their debut full-length On The Wing Now is a beautifully executed and grandiose indie pop record that ebbs and swells in all the right places. The record sounds almost retro but (at the same time) fresh and new. Connected by a dense and layered production that recalls MBV or JAMC, every sound is perfectly placed. Singer Matt Popieluch's vocals soar, Lewis Pesacov's reverb-drenched guitars fuzz and jangle, Garrett Ray's cymbals crash in the distance and Ariel Rechtshaid's bass tightly thumps. While I know that Pesacov and Popieluch met in San Fransisco, Rechtshaid is the former frontman of the underrated ska-punk-pop band The Hippos. I haven't seen him in many years, but I can't wait to tell him how great this record is.
On The Wing Now is a helluva debut from the guys in Foreign Born. The songs themselves (especially with Popieluch's voice carrying the melody) remind me of early 80's U2 and other post-wave pop bands like Simple Minds, etc... Moody without brooding. Catchy and upbeat without quite being anthemic. On The Wing Now is out now on Dim Mak.
