Tegan and Sara - The Con -

Tegan & Sara - The ConWhile I've known of Tegan And Sara for quite awhile now, I'd never actually heard any of their songs (except for that White Stripes song) until recently. The latest album from these Canadian twin sisters is called The Con and it is (for me at least) a really intriguing record. I decided to give it a spin after hearing Tegan sing on Against Me's latest album New Wave.

On first listen, I hated the vocals. I utterly abhorred them. The funny thing is that I couldn't stop playing the songs. The songs were great and as much as I despised the layered whining vocals of Tegan and Sara, I couldn't stop playing it. And even after many many listens I'm not entirely sure if I actually like them or if its the audio equivalent of a messy car accident that you can't peel your eyes away from. Maybe a little of both, or maybe I'm just fooling myself.

Aside from the "unique" vocal stylings of the sisters Quinn, what else can I say about The Con? Well, it features a raw but slightly polished edge courtesy of producer and Death Cab guitarist Chris Walla. The songs are oddly great in a strange way that I can't explain. Infectious without being catchy, The Con explores the various intimate stages of relationships from marriage to the break-up with a biting edge. I'd compare it to other Tegan and Sara albums if knew what they sounded like, but for now, I'm content just enjoying this one.

They're addictive, there's no doubt about it. I never hated the vocals, but when I first got into them a few years ago I was a little puzzled about why exactly I was spending so much time listening to them.

The new record is fantastic though. One of the best of the year, I think. It's also fascinating to pay attention to the differences in the two sisters' songs. Once you get a sense of which style is which, it's almost as easy to spot as the difference between a Lennon or a McCartney song. It's a big part of what gives the record a sense of diversity.

If you get the chance, check out "Living Room" from If It Was You. Probably their best song.

I can see where you're coming from with the car crash analogy :)

Definitely try "So Jealous", their previous album. It has a lot of songs that are equally infectious despite the vocals.

Infectious is the PERFECT word for this album. Just great from beginning to end.
