Amy and I have recently taught our daughter Hailey the word "punk." And when we ask her if she is a little punk, she says (or rather, yells) "PUNK! Yeah!" She's one-and-a-half mind you. When can we start putting pins on her jackets? I can only hope that she will grow up to love punk music and embrace its ideals.
Anyhow, one of the few punk bands around right now that still makes me go bitchcakes like I was 16 or 17 is RVA's Smoke Or Fire. Their latest (and second) full-length This Sinking Ship is out now and its another slab of melodic but gruff and gritty punk rock with songs about what punk rock songs are about: drinking, politics, and the shitty state of the world. It is a truly uncomplicated and working-class album.
Smoke Or Fire is a band whose music should be played too loud and shouted along to. Their sound is fast and powerful but has catchy sing-a-long hooks exactly when it needs to. Its like being punched in the gut by your girlfriend only to have her kiss you to make it all better. They do what they do and don't give a f&*k what you think. Their music would be right up your alley if you're a fan of bands like The Lawrence Arms, Dillinger Four, Avail, Hot Water Music, Kid Dynamite, or Strike Anywhere.
This Sinking Ship is out now on Fat Wreck Chords and is is as solid a punk release as I've heard yet in 2007.
